Tips: Using LinkedIn to Attract Your Ideal Clients

Today, I have the great pleasure of being the host on DAY 13 of the Virtual Blog Tour for Melonie Dodaro, author of the brand new book,The LinkedIn Code: Unlock the Largest Online Business Social Network to Get Leads, Prospects & Clients for B2B, Professional Services and Sales & Marketing Pros. That book will be celebrating its official launch on Tuesday June 3rd, 2014.

MELONIE DODARO is the founder of Top Dog Social Media, a social media agency that helps brands, businesses, professionals and sales teams use social media marketing and social selling to boost their visibility, attract new customers and increase their revenue. Dubbed by the media as Canada’s #1 LinkedIn expert and social media strategist, Melonie trains corporate sales teams on how to use LinkedIn and speaks worldwide at both industry and corporate events and conferences.

Yesterday, Melonie visited Kathi Casey’s blog at where Melonie shared her top tips for building relationships on LinkedIn.

Today, I’d like to share with you a recent interview I had with Melonie where I asked her to share her expert LinkedIn advice for service-based solopreneurs.

TAI: How can service-based solopreneurs find leads on Linked In?

MELONIE: With over 300 million members and over one third of all professional in the world as members, LinkedIn is an excellent platform for service-based solopreneurs to find leads or prospects.

There are two great ways for you to find leads on LinkedIn. The first is to use the Advanced Search, with fields such as location, industry, title and company to narrow down the results and help you find a list of leads within your existing network.

The second is to find and join LinkedIn Groups that your ideal clients belong to. By joining groups with your ideal clients, you not only significantly increase the number of leads you have access to but you can also connect and message these leads without having to use an InMail, even if you are not directly connected. Participating in these groups will also help to build relationships and establish you as a credible expert in your industry. LinkedIn will allow you to join up to 50 groups and I encourage you to make full use of them.

TAI: What are the critical components of your LinkedIn profile that help your ideal clients find you?

MELONIE: Before you can start to improve your profile so your ideal clients will find you, you must first understand your ideal clients. You must determine the language they use and what keywords they would use to search for you.

Once you have this information, you should sprinkle these keywords throughout your profile, ensuring to include them in your Headline, Summary, Experience and Skills sections.

TAI: How can solopreneurs leverage LinkedIn business pages?

MELONIE: A great way to leverage Company pages is to take advantage of Sponsored Posts.

Similar to Facebook, you can promote specific updates that you post to your Company page. Sponsored posts allow you to be very precise in your targeting and can help you to expand awareness of your company beyond your existing network and followers. This feature comes with an in-depth analytics feature, which will help you understand what results you achieve from your efforts.

It is extremely important to remember to only create and sponsor posts that your ideal clients would find helpful or valuable. If you only post updates as another way to blast people with your services or promotions, you will be seen as spammy and you will be ignored.
